What If?

What If?

We all do it, let it be over small or big things. Worrying is a completely unproductive emotion that was can feel is necessary to get some things done. For instance, you have a final exam coming up and everyone who has already taken it says it was super hard. So now, you're worried that you didn't study enough.  We can all think of a time that we have worried about something. But like I said, it is an unproductive emotion. Worrying doesn't really get us anywhere. Say I am sitting at my desk waiting to receive my exam and I'm worrying I don't know enough. Worrying doesn't make me instantly any smarter or know anything I didn't know. Worry just packs a punch on yourself. Worry is best described as the advance interest we pay on troubles that seldom happen. Don't you agree?

So why do we worry about things? Well, I know I worry about things when I'm afraid of the outcome. "What if I fail that test?" We also worry when we doubt. "What if I'm not good enough?"

Now what if I told you that there is a cure to all this worrying? A complete cure that will wipe away all your worries about today and tomorrow. You don't have to be afraid anymore! What if I told you that you wouldn't have to worry about worrying ever again? Well, then I'd be lying. But I can tell you this. There is a pure medicine when it comes to worrying.

It's called prayer.

"Oh thanks, wise-guy. I knew that." I hope you aren't thinking that. "Prayer, sure, okay, but what I'm worrying about isn't worthy of prayer, it's stupid." Noooo.... here's where you are wrong! God wants more than anything to be the first one you turn to in times of worry or crisis or fear. When we do this, He promises a special blessing if you...

1. Stop Worrying! Start Praying. Don't ever think that your need is too insignificant for God's attention. God wants us to pray about everything. If something is bothering you, it obviously isn't "stupid." Don't be afraid to pray. But before you go seek advice from anyone else, always seek help from the Lord first. Then go to a friend or some one you trust for advice and prayer.

2. Tell God Your Needs. Even though God is all-knowing and is well aware of your situation, He desires that you verbally tell Him what you need and place them in His hands. If everything were fine and dandy, we wouldn't need God. God is always waiting with open arms to fill you with peace and comfort.

3. Present Your Requests with Thanks. Instead of praying with those common feelings of doubt, you can thank God for his answers in advance because of the promises He has made to us in His word.

4. Receive God's Peace. Once you do these things, you will experience God's peace. Seriously. I'm not kidding. God's peace exceeds anything we can understand. His peace guards our hearts and our minds.

So what if the next time you are tempted to worry about something, you instead stop and pray to God with all of the energy you would have put into worrying in the first place? What if you said something along the lines of..

"Lord, here is my problem. It looms ever larger in my path, so I am putting it into Your hands. I am not going to worry, Lord. Instead, I am going to trust you. I am even going to thank you in advance for what you will do, because you know what you are doing."

This is never something easy to do, but if you want to overcome worry and experience God's peace, it is something you have to do consciously and consistently.

Philippians 4:6-7 New Living Translation (NLT)

6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

What if one day, we will never have to again worry about the "what ifs" in life? It's possible, just pray to Jesus.
