The greatest barrier to intimacy with God, is when we come to Him with BOXED expectations. We come, not to know Him as He reveals Himself to us, but to the limits of our ideals of who He is. We want CONTROL.
We find an example of this in John Chapter 13, where we see Jesus washing the feet of His Disciples.
"So he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you will not belong to me.” “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!” (John 13:4-9)
Timeout Ref! JESUS? King Jesus? Almighty Jesus, is taking off His clothing, and bending down to wash the DIRTY feet of His Disciples! But Peter, just isn't having it.
He goes. . . "WHOA WHOA WHOA! Jesus, You're washing MY feet?? No, this isn't happening!"
"I'm not worthy of this."
"I don't deserve this."
"Jesus, you're too good for this kind of service."
See, Peter wanted control. He viewed Jesus, not as He was revealing Himself. He viewed Him in the box of his own expectations. Through the limits of his own ideals.
Jesus corrects Peter and says, "If I don't wash your feet, you will not belong to Me." In other words, Jesus can't have His complete way in your life if you're not willing to break down the walls of false pride and self-centered ideals. Your relationship will NEVER get passed the elementary stages if you're unwilling to allow God to nurture you with His selfless love.
We will NEVER fully know Him if we don't cease to seek Him with this DETACHED form of intimacy. There is no short cut. There is no easy route. God calls us to earnestly pursue Him, and allow Him to pursue us.
I don’t know your story, but when God found Me, I was not so nice, neat, and put together! I was in chains! And I was lost in fruitless thoughts! And my feet were dirty from walking the rugged path of rebellion against God! And how many times did I sit in the room with the Disciples and Jesus, and I’m the Peter! Jesus comes over to wash my feet, and I push His Hands away! Because I’m so stuck in my own ideals! Unable to see that I don’t need control! Unable to see the desperate need for divine intervention and cleansing. Unable to see that He just wants to walk a little closer with me!
"No God I can do this on my own."
"I can get through this by my own strength."
"I can reignite my faith without your help."
The answer is NOT within yourself! It's STILL JESUS. It'll ALWAYS be JESUS. It'll NEVER stop being the love of JESUS. When Jesus becomes the supreme authority in our lives, then and ONLY then are we able to fully experience the divine attributes of His relationship with us. Seek God with all of your HEART, and STOP leaning towards your own human understanding of who YOU THINK He is. When we just reach for God with hearts of humility, He'll reach back with His graceful presence and allow us to experience an unmeasurable spiritual change in our lives.
Stop trying to fit God into your own ideals. Submit your life completely to Him as He speaks to you. Experience intimacy with Him outside the box of your control. Sit down in the chair of humility, and let Jesus wash your feet.
