“Don’t be Judas.” You hear that and you’re probably thinking of course you don’t want to be Judas. But you could be a “Judas” without even realizing it. Have you ever messed up, decided that you could no longer turn back to God? Judas was that person too…
So who exactly was Judas? Judas was a follower of Jesus. Judas was someone who gave up everything to follow Jesus, to walk with him. Judas was a man who saw the miracles of Jesus first hand, and yet Judas still came against Jesus and betrayed Him. After the betrayal, Judas ran back to where sin had led him to try to fix what he had done. Judas failed. Judas kills himself. Just like Judas we have sin and temptation enter into our lives. We will sin, I’m not saying that it won’t happen but it is what happens after we sin that needs to change. After Judas came against Jesus and betrayed Him, he realized what he had done and ran back to where the sin had led him. Similar to Judas, we run back to the sin thinking we can face it and overcome it. When Judas sees that he can’t reverse it, he hangs himself. The truth is when WE try to overcome sin by ourselves we will always fail.
The failure that we face with sin has different outcomes on different people. I was a Judas. I ran back thinking I could change by myself; I relied on myself and I failed. This led to my hanging, my death. Not my physical death but my spiritual death. We let ourselves be tortured by what we have done, we let shame reign in our lives, and let the TRUTH that we know the Savior and the One who has conquered all, be overshadowed by our sin and that shame. We let spiritual death rule thinking that what we have done is too big for God to forgive or that we are “too far gone” or “too damaged” for God to ever love us again. We believe the lie of the enemy instead of listening to the Truth that has been given to us. In Romans 8 we see a perfect example of this Truth of God’s love.
“Do you think anyone is going to be able to drive a wedge between us and Christ’s love for us? There is no way! Not trouble, not hard times, not hatred, not hunger, not homelessness, not bullying threats, not backstabbing, not even the worst sins listed in Scripture: They kill us in cold blood because they hate you. We’re sitting ducks; they pick us off one by one. None of this fazes us because Jesus loves us. I’m absolutely convinced that nothing—nothing living or dead, angelic or demonic, today or tomorrow, high or low, thinkable or unthinkable—absolutely nothing can get between us and God’s love because of the way that Jesus our Master has embraced us.” Romans 8:35-39 (MSG)
Here we can see the Bible, the God-breathed Scripture God Himself gave us telling us that there is NOTHING that can get between God’s love and us. It even says “not even the worst sins listed in Scripture” can drive a wedge and Christ’s love for us! So I want to remind you to not be a “Judas;” don’t forget the love that covers you and that God doesn’t turn His back on you no matter what you do. You don’t have to run after you sin or you fail, you don’t have to die, you weren’t called to die, but you were called to LIVE!
