Devotional: To Dream Or Not To Dream

I’ve always been a dreamer as a little girl. As I grew older, those dreams grew as well. I’ve always wanted a “circle of friends,” “marry my high school sweetheart,” and “have girl’s night out” every other weekend. My circle has turned into counting my friends on one hand. I am not with the person I dated in high school. My “girls” live in different cities and our lives are so compact so communication isn’t happening every single day. It is the complete opposite of what I envisioned for myself, right

There were many days when jealousy, bitterness, and extreme feelings of desire crept into my life and I allowed those feelings to live there. The reason is because I settled in my way of dreaming. I did not allow God’s best into my heart and certainly did not think it would happen for my life.

Are you still holding on to desires that are not a reality for you right now? First of all, it is perfectly okay to dream about the future. However, we must learn how to adapt and let go of our personal desires in order to live what God desired for us.

Should you stop dreaming about your future? Of course not! The Bible writes it plain and clear for us to dream about our future.

And the Lord answered me: “Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it.  For still the vision awaits its appointed time; it hastens to the end—it will not lie. it seems slow, wait for it; it will surely come; it will not delay. - Habakkuk 2:2-3

What if God doesn’t allow your desires to happen? This is the big game changer right here. Although it is good to dream, we must not hold it so close that we become blind to what God is doing in our reality.

Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand. –Proverbs 19:21

See, I believe it is healthy to make your desires known to God about your relationships, career, friends, family, and talents. As you make these dreams clear, God’s purpose within those desires will stand true throughout your life.  In this generation of instant gratification, we must remember who we must serve in order to receive the desires of God’s heart.

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. - Matthew 6:33

While you’re dreaming, planning, and writing out your goals, make sure your intent is aligned with pleasing God. If you’re not sure about that read Galatians 5:22-23. Don’t be anxious about your dreams if you feel like you’ve been waiting your whole life for something to happen (Matthew 6:34). Always remember that you want God’s best for your life instead of your own desires. Be intentional about your dreams and desires to please God. After that, start letting go of your desires because God is blessing you with a beautiful reality if you allow Him too.
