Devotional: The Stumbling Block

What happens when you decide that today is THE day to get rid of that sin destroying your life? You listen to every song that ministers to your spirit, read the perfect scripture tailored to your situation, and pray the most powerful prayer in a long time. Then, that moment hits you. You fall. You take 5 steps back from the three steps you implemented forward on your journey.  What happens to you?

I’ll tell you what happens to me during my time of feeling defeated.  I feel confused because I am supposed to be stronger by now. I feel lost because I know I love Jesus with all of my heart. I feel angry at myself because I told God that I will do my very best to stop choosing what isn’t like Him. I feel like Jesus shouldn’t love me because I fail him so much.

Is that how you’re feeling?

Well, I have one thing to say to that.

38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

-Romans 8:38-39

I want you to rest your mind for a second. Do you remember how messed up you were last year? Do you see a change within you in 2016? Trust me, the small changes add up to big progress. You may wish you were further along in this journey. Have you tried asking God to use your imperfections and shortcomings for a greater purpose?

If not, I’ll ask you to join with me in prayer (at the end of this article) for God to help us. To be honest, I am struggling right along with you. I’m so tired of feeling afraid of being happy and living a better life without sin. I know I hate it. I know it doesn’t feel good at all. However, it is the norm for me in some situations. It is hard and frustrating to deal with certain parts of my life. I know it is for you. However, God sees, hears, and feels our pain. God is intentional about saving us from ourselves.

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. – 1 Corinthians 10:13

From this day forward, let’s instill this scripture (or other helpful scriptures) in our minds. You can tape this scripture on your mirror, paint a sign, or however God leads you so it can be seen and pressed into your mind. We are more than conquerors in Jesus. We are fearfully and wonderfully made. We are the HEAD and not the tail. We were created in God’s image. We shall not be afraid of living the best life that God has placed for us.  Fear shall not live within us any longer.

Please join me in prayer:

We come to you stumbling in our sin. For some (including myself), we’ve been struggling for years with the same problem, same fall, and same heartache. Although we hate it, we love you so much more. Rain down on us Lord. Cleanse our spirits from this pain, sin, and bad judgement. We need you right now. I declare that fear shall not live within us from this day forward. After this, our faith will be stronger. After this, our doubt will be washed away. After this, we will share our testimony to help your children.

After this, we shall remember your price for our sins as a constant reminder to come to you sooner rather than later. After this, we shall leave that sin for good and live stronger in your presence. We invite your Holy Spirit to live through us and guide us to victory.  We say YES to your will, God. We love you. Please forgive us for stumbling and being afraid of your Joy. You get the glory forever and ever. In Jesus’ Name. Amen!
