6 Habits To Avoid In The New Year

2016 is right around the corner.  I believe this will be a year of favor and abundance in your life! God wants to elevate His people and use them for great things in the kingdom and in the earth. However, before we can truly benefit from all that God has for us, there are some things we have to ensure are not present as a hindrance in our lives. Here are six ‘blockers’ that could prevent us from reaching our highest heights as we enter into a new year:

Negative thinking:  I'm sure we all have allowed some type of negative thinking to infiltrate our mind at some point. But when it becomes a mode of living, it can stagnate or bound you. Negative beliefs are anything that would hinder you from achieving, succeeding, excelling, or maximizing your divine potential. Sometimes negative thoughts are a result of unloving people mistreating us or failed opportunities. But don't let that stop you. Sink, or swim. Believe in your greatness.

For God hath not given us a spirit of fear; put of power, and of love, and a sound mind

(2 Timothy 1:7)

People pleasing:  Even Jesus couldn't please everybody. And neither should you. If we say yes or give in to everything someone else wants, it weakens us or can strip us of our dignity. There are times in life when you have to stand up for what's right, what's best, and what's ethical. Doing so should produce fruit in some way. Use discernment and wisdom. It’s okay to say no sometimes. Bottom line - don't be a full-time people pleaser. You'll become a doormat.

Toxic relationships:  Toxic people will drain you emotionally & mentally. You may love them, but some people are better loved at a distance. People aren't perfect, but that doesn't mean you should tolerate or allow negativity, abuse or drama in your life. If married, seek counseling and prayer before deciding that a separation is absolutely necessary.

Lies of the world:  Yes, it's true. The world has been feeding us lies for quite some time - and pretty craftily. Famous ones include:

*Riches = happiness, fulfillment / no riches = no happiness, fulfillment
*Slender women are the most beautiful & valuable
*You've failed too many times. What then are you good for??
*You're too young or old to go back to school, start a business, invent an idea, ect.

If you've bought into such lies, own the truth instead. God is truth. So if we are in God, we should not fall for the lies of the world.

Jealousy/envy:  This is where you have to be the utmost honest with yourself. Are you right now, at this moment, jealous or envious of someone you know? If you have the humility to admit yes, first know, jealousy is an ungodly spirit. When it is not cast down, it is potentially dangerous. If you are harboring such feelings toward someone, it is typically a symptom of a deeper issue within you. This can range from emotions of inadequacy, insecurity, growing up without much (materially), un-fulfilled or failed desires, and so forth. Jealousy can lead to a dark road if you're around that envied individual on a regular basis. You don't want that. Rebuke such spirits and discover your worth & identity in Christ. When you know this, you don't have to compare yourself to anyone.

Living in the past: Fact - you can't move forward if you're looking back. That's literally and figuratively. But we're speaking of the latter. Some things from our past haven't fully been cleaned up or released. For this reason, it can seem as real as the present. But you have to live for today. Made a mistake? Forgive yourself, and ask God for forgiveness. 1 John 1:19 reads, If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Wow! So why are you beating yourself up over past mistakes? If our Heavenly Father is willing to forgive us, we should learn from those mistakes, march forward and strive to be better each day! Maybe you didn't achieve a goal or desire in times past that has left a sour taste of disappointment or regret. Still, you have to march forward. There is so much for you to accomplish in life. Don't get stuck on what didn't happen 5 or 15 years ago.

Be encouraged and empowered as you walk into 2016. Don’t allow the enemy to have control in your life. You are destined for greatness and with Christ remember: all things are possible. Pray for God to reveal anything to you that may be hindering or stagnating your growth or your understanding of who He is. I decree and declare that you shall be a healthier you spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and physically in the new year! God is with you and has your absolute best interest in mind. Seek Him, trust Him, and praise Him.

And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fullness of God. Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.
