Yup. I said it! The BACKGROUND ROLE. That’s the position so many men are in today. Hiding in the shadows of the unseen and the irrelevant. As if they are too afraid to do or say anything that might reveal who or where they are. Identity? Dignity? Check the spiritual graveyard because they died their deaths a long time ago, and their tombstones should be right next to integrity and boldness. For the past few generations woman have had to step up and play the BACKBONE ROLE. So I’m about to give 5 key reasons why this is not okay, in hopes that some of us men will come out of hiding and answer the call to leadership.
1. GODLY men have been called to leadership.
"Teach them God’s decrees, and give them His instructions. Show them how to conduct their lives. But select from all the people some capable, honest men who fear God and hate wrong. Appoint them as leaders over groups of one thousand, one hundred, fifty, and ten."
– Exodus 18:20 – 2
Pay attention to that word “GODLY” for just a second, because it’s the most vital attribute of the sentence. There are a lot of men in the world. In fact there’s about 3,571,374,099 of these uniquely designed creatures that exist, but not all of them are called to lead. This blog is directed towards God’s men. Honest men who fear God and hate wrong. The men who believe in Christ and apply His life to their own. Men who bear fruit. Fruit – meaning spiritual projection. The idea that God is living on the inside of you, yet His character is portrayed through your lifestyle. Now, when I say that you have been called, I mean that each specified portion or characteristic of your purpose in life has already been outlined by God’s will.
SO, essentially when I say that GODLY men have been called to leadership, I intend that it is a part of God’s Sovereign Will that honest men who fear God and hate wrong have been predestined to bear fruit and portray Christ through their very lives. Because. . . . Isn’t that what real leadership is? It’s the ability to exemplify Christ in all that you do. For men, being in the background role will never fulfill that. It’s time to STEP UP.
2. Unwillingness is the cancer to potential.
Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.
- 1 Peter 4:10
One of the main keys to living a life that honors God, is having a heart that longs to know what He is saying. God is a very active and communicating God, but someone has to be listening on the other end. One of the many reasons why men are unwilling to STEP UP and lead is because they can’t hear God telling them that they can! So many people have taken on the initiative to downgrade men and their lack of character, meanwhile they themselves are the very instruments the enemy is using to kill, steal, and, destroy the confidence of men. I want to focus on your potential as a man who fears God and hates wrong. Because playing the background role is wrong! Peter said in chapter 4 that we all have gifts given to us by God. Gifts we can use to lead His people. Potential is the group of gifts given to us by God that can be used for the benefit of many, not one. Allow me to reassert your potential as a man and blockade the voices that inspire your unwillingness, by SCREAMING the following facts in your ear:
You are as valuable and capable as God says you are, not mere humans.
You have God’s character and qualities, therefore you CAN and you WILL lead.
You can accomplish anything in your thoughts and actions with the aid of Christ.
God believes in you and the abilities He’s given you.
And so do I.
3. A lazy mentality leads to a path of destruction.
“He who is lazy in labor is a brother to him who destroys.” Proverbs 18:9
BREAKING NEWS!! A recent study shows that playing video games, sitting on the couch, watching T.V., and watching life pass you by, decreases effective productivity!
(I hope that made you laugh, because I’m cracking up)
Listen guys, we know that playing video games 24/7 and sitting on the couch is lazy. When we engage in actions that are unproductive . . . that’s lazy, even though we’re “taking action”. Why? Because it bears no fruit. Remember “when I became a man, I put childish things behind me”.
When I became a man I put sitting on the couch behind me.
When I became a man I put playing games behind me.
When I became a man I put temporary satisfactions behind me.
When I became a man I put “just getting by effort” behind me.
When I became a man I put lying and cheating behind me.
When I became a man . . . God was then able to replace my laziness with my potential and develop me as the leader He’s called me to be all along.
So STOP destroying your purpose by being lazy and answer the call to leadership.
4. The strength and wisdom of a man produces integrity.
The glory of young men is their strength, and the honor of old men is their gray hair.
What does being in the background really mean? It means that you don’t possess the strength or spiritual wisdom to be in the forefront. Strength and wisdom are a part of the gifts God has given all of us, but we neglect them when we are lazy, unwillingly, and fearful. Our gifts are pruned through the eloquent experiences we engage in during life. How are we going to engage in meaningful experiences to prune our strength and wisdom, if we’re too busy playing the background role? Too many men are focused on unproductive activities that do nothing to enhance their lives or their gifts, as men called to lead. For example: We are so focused on building up our physical appearance. Going to the gym every day and taking protein shakes at the crack of dawn. “Get your weight up”, they say.
How about you lift your Bible and “get your weight up” in the Spirit.
Though He designed them, God is not majorly concerned with your physical appearance or strength. Your mustache, beard, and overfilled with protein muscles are not what regulates the justification of your manhood. ASK SAMSON. Physical strength and worldly wisdom gets you only so far. It is the spiritual strength, humility, diligence, and character of man that justifies his right to be called a man. Because at the end of the day those qualities matter more to his Creator, the One who called him “Man”.
5. Godly men should exemplify the relationship of Christ and the Church.
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; - Ephesians 5:25
My last point, and certainly the most important. Men, we should be exemplifying the love, dedication, sacrifice, and passion of Christ Jesus. Sometimes I often ask myself; “what if Jesus played the background role? “. What if He just sat back and watched us die in our sins, with no hope of reconciliation with The Father? What if He was lazy, unwilling, and too afraid to STEP UP and lead us to a path of redemption and wholeness? What if He just . . . . gave up on us?
But He didn’t. In fact, He loved the Church so much that He sacrificed pride, fear, temporary satisfactions, and His very own life that we are ourselves might have life.
